On September 7th, 2011 Nedlaw Living Walls was featured in the Daily Commercial News. We are very proud to have been apart of this project at Centennial College which is working towards LEED Gold Certification. This collaboration with Diamond and Schmitt Architects and EllisDon has been an enjoyable one and we look forward to working with this team again in the future.

New Nedlaw Living Wall: Greenbelt Cultural Center

Nedlaw Continuing to Research
Nedlaw along with Seneca College have teamed up with funding from the Federal Government to continue research into the effects of biofiltration. Our Living Walls developed through the University of Guelph have been constantly researched and we continue to find ways to improve our design to let mother nature do her wonders. New Living Wall Awarded: Mississauga Executive Center
Nedlaw Living Walls is excited to be working the The Jesslin Group, on the Mississauga Executive Center in Mississauga, Ontario. The two buildings will be under renovations and adding 2 living walls in one building with a third living wall in the entrance of the building next door. We would like to thank the architect John Cole of WZMH Architects for including us in this project. As we begin the project build look for a project page and photos to be updated.

Living wall to be installed as part of Centre for Sustainability in Energy and the Environment
BRESLAU, ONTARIO; May 24, 2011 – NEDLAW Living Walls has been awarded the contract for development and installation of one of its patented living wall systems at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The 16 foot tall by 23 foot wide structure will be a key feature of the University’s Centre for Sustainability in Energy and the Environment (CSEE) and is scheduled for installation in June 2011.
“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to work with Cape Breton University on the CSEE project,” says Chris Johnston, Marketing and Sales Manager with NEDLAW Living Walls. “A living wall is an appropriate part of and complement to this facility which will be a leading-edge, green facility focused on developing environmental, commercial and technological solutions related to the management of industrial pollution and sustainable sources of clean energy.”
The living wall will be located on the mezzanine level overlooking the atrium in the public area of the CSEE building and will be a vertical garden comprised of diverse tropical plant species. In addition to its role as environmental art and an interior amenity, the living wall will also contribute to indoor air quality through the recirculation and natural filtration of internal air through the growth medium, which is a unique feature of the patented NEDLAW Living Wall biofilter system.
Donnie MacIsaac, Director, Facilities Management, at Cape Breton University, says that while the aesthetics of the living wall will be hard to ignore, the actual work of the biowall will contribute to the functioning of the physical CSEE facility. “Traditional methods of managing indoor air quality include bringing ‘fresh air’ in from the outside and conditioning it through heating or cooling, depending on the time of year. The living wall brings natural outdoor air processes inside and uses the interior plantscapes to perform some of those same functions.”
The living wall for the CSEE was designed by NEDLAW Living Walls in collaboration with Halifax-based Barrie and Langille Architects Limited and its Toronto associate Moriyama and Teshima Architects. Michael Barrie, project team leader, notes that interest in environmental features such as living walls has increased significantly in recent years, pointing out that this is the fourth installation his firm has worked on with NEDLAW Living Walls since 2009. Two completed installations are located at the Waterfront Campus of the Nova Scotia Community College in the new Centre for the Built Environment in Dartmouth, and a third is featured in the newly renovated NSCC Institute of Technology Campus in Halifax.
“We all share a deeply rooted, innate attraction for nature and for natural environmental features,” Barrie says. “Buildings can be much more vibrant, engaging, and environmentally accountable by hosting natural features and supporting natural habitat, inside and out, in the form of green roofs, exterior biowalls, interior living walls, and water features that not only enrich visual interest and appeal, but also perform effectively as air and water filters, and as humidifiers, in a way that supports energy conservation. Building occupants also routinely speak to the uplifting effect that living walls, like good daylighting and stimulating outdoor views, have on the quality of the work environment.”
Installation of the living wall at the Centre for Sustainability in Energy and the Environment is scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2011, with an official opening of CSEE slated for mid-September.
